Is it possible to remove debris before a build up? I know it’s a lot of water power but is this the worse rain in 120 years? Or is it that there is more possible debris that is not being cleared upstream? I wonder if there was a tactic to address that in the past.

Why wouldnt a long reach excavator with a grab be contracted in and pluck as much debris away from the gates to allow greater flow through the dam and reduce the erosion created by the new water path.....crazy this has not been done

The tailwheel was definitely not locked…..as soon as it touched down it rotated.

I wonder why no effort is or has been made to remove the debris blocking the flood gates? Should have been a plan and equipment on stand by to clear the debris ever since the build of that dam. This is allegory of what government does. NOTHING when it is important to do something good. Like watching a Pearl Harbor attack from nature as government stands down with there thumb up there ass. It is a ALLERGORY of the nations borders as invaders flood in and government does nothing to stop the breech of the border. And of coarse the government official tells you stop the worry let the dam down stream take the hit as if that dam will not also fail after this one does. When will people stop assuming GOV. give a good GD about anything or anyone.

This is what it looks like when corporations drain all wet lands and fields with miles of drain tile.

I believe if the water is going over the dam uncontrolled it has already failed.... just not completely

they were closer to Fortuna... which if clear would have been a walk in the park, Willts almost certainly clear. Covelo is a poor place, but 4.5 hours is more than enough for one day. Too tired to think straight, or even read a chart. Not too tired to kill himself and his wife. this is why you keep sleeping bags in the plane.

Well once the water levels return to normal, it looks like they’ll have a good opportunity to actually make an emergency spillway out of the damage that the overflow caused.

What a dam situation.

While working in my Dad's hangar in about 1986, I noticed that a T-28 Trojan was heading for the runway with all the red flags in place. I hopped on my scooter and got in their way at the last second before the roll. The PIC Dick Sprague ( former AT-6 Sky-typer team leader) and a local doctor that was learning to fly his new plane, stayed in their cockpit as I removed petot cover and landing gear locking pins. They then wen't ahead with their departure as if nothing had happened! If they had lifted off with the gears locked down, they very likely would have stalled and crashed. It blew me away that they didn't taxi back and at least see what else they missed on the pre-flight inspection. About a week later, they were both fish food in the Atlantic after low level stunt didn't go well. Sometimes you can see a disaster before it happens..

It looks like the water coming out of the top of the powerhouse may just be the roof drains.

Questions: 1) Why was 28% (two gates) of the dam's overflow capacity sealed? The original designers clearly allowed for this level of water flow. 2) Why wasn't the debris removed proactively as it was building up, or even blocked before reaching the spillway? Most dams employ a debris catchment system to prevent this exact problem. Seems to me like someone intentionally made bad decisions to force a failure of this magnitude. The issues with this dam appear to be the result of recent mis-management, not issues with the original construction, design, or age. There is something more behind this story. Full disclosure... I lived nearby during the severe flooding in the early 1990s, and I have dined at The Dam Store.

I live in Washington State and a classmate for Northwest History class drew Grand Coulee Dam for his project; he titled it “Grand Coulee: The Biggest Damn Project in the World!” He intentionally misspelled it on his poster but it drew a laugh from the class & the teacher.

Press conference just concluded. According tho the County Engineer, even if the dam failed "tipped over or something" the surge at Mankato would be 1 to 2 tenths of a foot....and I have been corrected that the bedrock is the Jordan Sandstone. While not as erosion resistant as limestone/dolomite, it is pretty good and magnitudes better than the glacial till and topsoil in the area.

where can I send you links to videos I think you should analyze? I just watched an old video of an aircraft taking off from johnson creek airport and was curious on what your take on it was.

I live in the OKC / Yukon area, and although I am not a pilot, my gut assumption is they were lined up on old Hwy 4 which is almost directly lined up with R13 about 8km out. That whole area is saturated in the communities lights EXCEPT for this little section just after the High School! (well lite and Texas sized football stadium btw). That area is basically oddly forested and from the air at that time of night, likely looked like an island of property not lit and a lit up runway at the same degree direction as the runway. I am interested in hearing more to see if my hunch is correct.

Geee i dont remember being able to drive into the patch of a commercial airliner so why should boats have the opportunity too? Should have dedicated water space gated off so no boats can access

Hi Juan, Dan did state in his video this past Sunday, that he thinks the right brake did not perform uniformly and in sync with the left brake and, therefore the pull to the left when the brakes were applied. After incident testing of the brakes and fluid level should help in determining the cause. Kind Regards, Dave

Both air, water, and electricity will try and find the path of least resistance when the situation goes into excessive overload status. When this is all over and done with, they better have a better reconstruction plan for future such occurences, for sure.
